One was rich; the other was so poor that words can scarcely describe it. The poor one died, leaving behind a son \u2014 and the boy grew up poor as well. One day, the young man asked his uncle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUncle, tell me \u2014 what\u2019s the better way to live these days: with truth or with deceit?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The uncle laughed bitterly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAh, where would you find truth now? There\u2019s no truth left in this world \u2014 only lies.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, uncle,\u201d said the nephew. \u201cTruth still lives. It\u2019s better to live by truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen let\u2019s see who\u2019s right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShall we go to court?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo court? No, let\u2019s go along the road. The first man we meet, we\u2019ll ask him. Whatever he says, that will be the answer. If truth is on your side \u2014 my cattle are yours; if it\u2019s on mine \u2014 your cattle are mine. We\u2019ll ask three people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAgreed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so they set off. After a while, they met a traveler returning from work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood day to you, kind sir!\u201d<br>\u201cGood day.\u201d<br>\u201cTell us, how is it better to live now \u2014 by truth or by falsehood?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHa! Good people, where have you seen truth these days? It\u2019s gone from the world. Better to live by falsehood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s one for me!\u201d the uncle said cheerfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nephew\u2019s heart sank. They went on and met a nobleman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s ask this gentleman,\u201d said the nephew. \u201cHe\u2019s educated \u2014 surely he\u2019ll tell us the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVery well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They greeted the lord and asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell us, sir, how is it better to live nowadays \u2014 by truth or by falsehood?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGood people, there\u2019s no truth left, not even in the courts. Better to live by falsehood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s two for me!\u201d cried the uncle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nephew grew gloomier still. A little further along the road, they met a priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s ask the priest,\u201d said the nephew. \u201cHe\u2019s a man of God \u2014 surely he\u2019ll know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll right.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They greeted the priest and asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFather, how is it better to live these days \u2014 by truth or by falsehood?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAh, my good people, truth has vanished from the world. Better to live by falsehood.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree times my truth!\u201d said the uncle, triumphant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nephew had no choice but to hand over all his cattle. Left naked, barefoot, and hungry, he wandered the world in despair until, hopeless, he resolved to hang himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He took a rope and went into the forest. Looking for a branch strong enough to bear him, he muttered: \u201cThat one looks good \u2014 I could tie the rope there and end it all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just then, a wolf appeared. Terrified, he scrambled up the tree, forgetting his rope below. As he sat there trembling, three devils came running \u2014 and then a fourth, their leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chief devil asked his servants what mischief they\u2019d done. One boasted he had spoiled a dam beyond repair; another, that he had dried up the water in an entire city; the third, that he had bewitched a king\u2019s only daughter so no doctor could cure her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leader laughed at each of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019ve done well,\u201d he said, \u201cbut not completely. If someone cuts three trees in the ravine and lays them crosswise, the dam will hold. If someone digs up the raspberry bush in the city square, the water will return. And if someone shaves off the deaf corner and smokes the princess with it \u2014 she\u2019ll be well again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The man in the tree heard everything. When the devils flew away, he climbed down and thought: \u201cPerhaps it\u2019s true what they said.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He went to the lord\u2019s estate and offered to fix the dam \u2014 and when he did as the devils had said, it held fast. The lord paid him richly in money and horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he traveled to the city that had no water. He dug up the raspberry bush in the square \u2014 and water gushed out, filling every well and street. The people rewarded him with gold and gifts until he was wealthier than his uncle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At last, he went to the kingdom where the princess lay dying. He told the king he could cure her. The king promised him great riches and his daughter\u2019s hand if he succeeded. The man shaved off the deaf corner, smoked the princess with it \u2014 and within three days she was as healthy and beautiful as before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The king kept his word. When he died, the poor man \u2014 who had once been ready to hang himself \u2014 became king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years passed. One day, a rich merchant came to trade in the kingdom. The king recognized him \u2014 it was his uncle. But he said nothing, only welcomed him kindly. When the merchant finished his business, the king sent for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTell me, from what land do you come?\u201d<br>\u201cFrom such and such a place.\u201d<br>\u201cAnd your name?\u201d<br>\u201cSo and so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the king revealed himself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDo you know me, uncle? I am your nephew \u2014 the one who vanished long ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The uncle was speechless. The king continued:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou said it was better to live by falsehood than by truth. But see \u2014 truth has triumphed. You are a merchant, and I am a king.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He told him everything that had happened, forgave him, and gave him two ships filled with treasure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTake these,\u201d he said, \u201cand tell everyone that it\u2019s better to live by truth than by deceit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The uncle took the ships and sailed home. But envy gnawed at his heart. Why was <em>he<\/em> not a king?
