Once there was a nobleman who loved stories \u2014 the more unbelievable, the better.
In the same village lived a man named Ivan, who knew plenty of tales. So the nobleman sent for him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Ivan arrived, the lord said,
\u201cCome on, Ivan, tell me a tale.\u201d
But Ivan shook his head.
\u201cI won\u2019t, my lord. You\u2019ll just say I\u2019m lying.\u201d
\u201cI won\u2019t,\u201d said the lord. \u201cLook \u2014 I\u2019ll put a hundred gold coins on the table. If I ever call you a liar, the money\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He placed the gold on the table.
\u201cAll right,\u201d said Ivan, \u201cbut whenever I ask, \u2018Is it true, my lord?\u2019, you must answer, \u2018True!\u2019\u201d
\u201cDeal,\u201d said the lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Ivan began:
\u201cWhen I was young, I planted a bean under the bench in my house. Isn\u2019t that true, my lord?\u201d
\u201cTrue,\u201d said the lord.
\u201cThe bean grew up to the bench, poked through it, reached the ceiling, broke through the roof, and grew straight up to the sky. Isn\u2019t that true, my lord?\u201d
\u201cTrue,\u201d said the lord.
\u201cWhen I saw that the bean had grown all the way to heaven, I started climbing it. But when I got there, the gates of heaven were locked. They wouldn\u2019t let me in, and I had nothing to eat. Then I saw a pile of barley chaff, so I twisted it into a rope and started climbing down. When the rope ran short, I tore some off the top to tie to the bottom \u2014 but it wasn\u2019t enough. I fell into a swamp and got stuck up to my neck. Isn\u2019t that true, my lord?\u201d
\u201cTrue,\u201d said the lord.
\u201cI couldn\u2019t get out. A wild duck flew by, built a nest on my head, and hatched ducklings. Then a wolf came, ate the ducklings, and when I grabbed his tail and shouted, \u2018Father!\u2019, he pulled me out of the swamp. I walked through the swamp and saw some herdsmen tending pigs \u2014 and there, among them, was your father, my lord, herding pigs too! Isn\u2019t that true, my lord?\u201d
\u201cYou\u2019re lying! That\u2019s not true!\u201d shouted the lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ivan calmly took the hundred gold coins from the table and went home smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
