Once upon a time, there lived a Cat and a Rooster. The Cat would play his fiddle, and the Rooster would sing cheerful songs. When the Cat went out to find food, the Rooster stayed home to guard the house. Each time before leaving, the Cat would say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow listen, don\u2019t let anyone in, and don\u2019t go outside \u2014 no matter who calls you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll right, all right,\u201d the Rooster would reply. Then he\u2019d lock the door and sit quietly, waiting for the Cat to return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But one day a sly Fox came by and decided to trick him. She crept up under the window when the Cat was away and called sweetly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRooster, dear Rooster, look out your window!
I\u2019ve got golden wheat and cool, fresh water!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the Rooster clucked back,
\u201cTok-tok, tok-tok \u2014 the Cat told me not!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Fox saw her trick hadn\u2019t worked, so she tried another. Late that night, she scattered golden grains of wheat under the Rooster\u2019s window and hid behind a bush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the morning, when the Cat went out, the Rooster peeked through the window and saw the wheat.
\u201cI\u2019ll just peck a little,\u201d he thought. \u201cNo one will notice \u2014 and the Cat will never know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the moment he stepped outside, the Fox pounced, grabbed him, and ran!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rooster cried out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBrother Cat, Brother Cat!
The Fox is carrying me away \u2014
Beyond the high mountains,
Through the dark forests!
Come save me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By the time the Cat heard him, the Fox was long gone. The Cat wept bitterly, then took his fiddle and a painted sack and set off for the Fox\u2019s house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the Fox had four daughters and one little son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before leaving to hunt, the old Fox told her children:
\u201cDon\u2019t let anyone in! Watch the Rooster, and boil some water \u2014 I\u2019ll cook when I get back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cat crept up under the window, tuned his fiddle, and began to play and sing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, the Fox, the Fox has a fine new yard,
Four lovely daughters, and one bright son,
Little Philip, the youngest one!
Come out, dear Fox, and see \u2014
How well I play for thee!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eldest fox-daughter couldn\u2019t resist.
\u201cYou stay here,\u201d she said to her sisters, \u201cI\u2019ll just take a peek at who\u2019s playing so beautifully!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as soon as she stepped outside, the Cat grabbed her and stuffed her into his painted sack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he began to play again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh, the Fox, the Fox has a fine new yard,
Four lovely daughters, and one bright son,
Little Philip, the youngest one!
Come out, dear Fox, and see \u2014
How well I play for thee!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second daughter couldn\u2019t help herself \u2014 she came out too, and the Cat caught her as well. One by one, he lured all the fox-children out and tied them up in his sack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he hung the sack on a dry willow tree, crept into the house, found the poor Rooster, untied him, and together they ate all the Fox\u2019s dinner. They tipped over the pot of boiling water and ran back home as fast as they could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
