We seek answers in folklore and in conversations with outstanding representatives of our nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, our guest is <strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong> \u2014 head of the <em>Zernyatko<\/em> ensemble and director of the House of Creativity <em>Windy Mountains<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good afternoon, Ms. Rayisa.<br>\u2014 Good afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each episode of our project is devoted to one of the values characteristic of the Ukrainian nation \u2014 one of the elements that form our identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And today, I\u2019d like to talk about the value of <strong>mutual aid<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While preparing for each episode, we explore how this value \u2014 in this case, mutual help \u2014 appears in Ukrainian folklore and traditions. And I\u2019d like to read to you a short summary of the conclusions we\u2019ve drawn so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMutual assistance in Ukrainian cultural tradition is a deeply rooted moral principle, a way of living together, and the foundation of social interaction within the community. It\u2019s expressed in rituals, folk poetry, and prose through themes of caring for loved ones, supporting the weak, helping neighbors, and showing hospitality to strangers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ms. Rayisa, what does <em>mutual assistance<\/em> mean to you personally?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, mutual assistance is like a whole layer of life that you constantly exist in. Without it, humanity simply wouldn\u2019t have survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It truly is \u2014 as you\u2019ve said \u2014 something that\u2019s woven into our traditions, our history, and our daily life. It\u2019s everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even back in Neolithic times, maybe earlier \u2014 remember the studies about the Trypillia culture \u2014 people lived in settlements where the houses were arranged in a circle. Behind those houses were their gardens and fields. That circle is symbolic \u2014 it shows how they lived together, side by side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone looked after the children, someone tended the fields \u2014 everyone had their role in that community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I believe that sense of community has stayed with us mentally. We see it when we gather at a table, when we work together, when children help their parents dig potatoes. It\u2019s already in us \u2014 this instinct for helping each other \u2014 part of who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In your childhood, did children naturally learn to help adults, or did adults specifically teach them to help? Or was it something that just happened on its own \u2014 part of everyday life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a child, it came naturally, because we always lived as part of a community. Families helped adults with everyday chores \u2014 cleaning the house, washing the floor, picking herbs, digging potatoes, herding the cow, or, for example, feeding the chickens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I went out to feed the chickens, I\u2019d scatter the grain, and a very handsome rooster would start chasing me. He\u2019d run after me like a true rooster, I\u2019d run from him, and the chickens would run after me! No one could tell who was chasing whom \u2014 the rooster after me or the chickens after him. But the chickens were good \u2014 they\u2019d run after me and wouldn\u2019t let the rooster peck me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So even the chickens helped and protected you. Do you remember the old <em>toloka<\/em> gatherings? That well-known tradition when everyone in the village would come together to help someone \u2014 harvest, build a house, or do some collective work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you witness that kind of thing in your childhood?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, of course. Among neighbors, it was a rule of life \u2014 people always helped one another. They\u2019d come together to harvest rye, to tie the sheaves, to pile it up. I was still very small, but I remember people reaping and stacking the grain. I even helped a little \u2014 they showed me what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We always worked together because it was too hard for one person alone. People always supported one another. And when we were children, I remember a neighbor would come over in the evenings and tell us fairy tales or sometimes scary stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019d all gather to listen \u2014 he\u2019d make us shiver with fear and then say, \u201cChildren, study hard, and you\u2019ll know how to behave and what not to do.\u201d Through those stories, through that folklore, we learned about life. Every evening he\u2019d come and tell us new tales \u2014 maybe traditional ones, maybe ones he made up himself, who knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s a wonderful example of how, back in every village, there was always a storyteller who knew countless tales. There was no YouTube, no Google back then \u2014 and that\u2019s how children were taught folk wisdom and life lessons through storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably, everyone who\u2019s been lucky enough has had moments in life when help appears almost miraculously \u2014 when someone suddenly shows up just when you need them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you had moments like that in your life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, there were many moments like that \u2014 when you stand there, not knowing what to do, and just cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, after finishing school, I came to Kyiv to apply to the Theater Institute, to the acting department under Mykola Mashchenko. During the entrance exams, I sang the song <em>\u201cStep by Step\u201d<\/em>. I had prepared everything that was required for admission, and I successfully passed almost all the stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then something happened \u2014 I won\u2019t go into details now \u2014 and Mykola Pavlovych Mashchenko told me, \u201cChild, you are wonderful. Come back next year \u2014 I will definitely take you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He even took me around the classrooms, saying to everyone, \u201cLook at this child who\u2019s applying to us!\u201d I was so thin back then, standing there singing <em>\u201cStep by step, step by step\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I walked out of the Theater Institute onto Khreshchatyk, where it was located, and started walking along the street. Tears were running down my face \u2014 I didn\u2019t even realize how I looked. Near the Khreshchatyk metro station, a woman walking toward me suddenly stopped and asked, \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong, dear?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I told her what had happened. She said, \u201cCome with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I followed her \u2014 and it turned out to be the Ukrainian Radio building. And that woman was the famous announcer <strong>Olena Kovalenko<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said, \u201cWell, sing for me \u2014 what did you sing there?\u201d So I sang <em>\u201cStep by step.\u201d<\/em> Other announcers came out too \u2014 Boyko, and a few others \u2014 and they said, \u201cChild, you should apply to the <strong>Viryovka Choir<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that\u2019s how it all happened. I submitted my documents, passed the entrance exams, studied in the Viryovka Choir Studio, and after graduation, when Avdievskyi himself was selecting new members for the professional choir \u2014 among huge competition \u2014 I was accepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And all of that began because of that one woman who appeared, as if from nowhere \u2014 <strong>Ms. Olena Kovalenko<\/strong>. She changed not only the course of my life, but perhaps even my destiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And did that moment become an example for you of what it means to help someone? Did it inspire you to help others later in life?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, absolutely. It inspired me deeply. And I\u2019ve always tried to help people whenever I could \u2014 even before that, I think it was just in my nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever I helped someone, I genuinely felt joy from it. I wanted that person to feel that they weren\u2019t alone, that someone cared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, once my friend and I were sewing dresses. She wasn\u2019t happy because her fabric had a flaw, while mine didn\u2019t. So I gave her my whole piece and took the smaller one for myself \u2014 just so she wouldn\u2019t be upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, when she saw my finished dress, she said, \u201cOh, yours turned out so beautiful!\u201d And that was enough for me \u2014 I had added a little something to make it look that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve always just wanted people to feel good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And has it ever happened that you helped someone, but that person not only forgot about it \u2014 they later refused to help you in return? In other words, they were ungrateful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know, honestly, when I help someone, I don\u2019t expect gratitude. I just do it because I want to. I help \u2014 and that\u2019s already good enough for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can\u2019t even recall a specific instance like that right now. Maybe there were such moments, probably yes \u2014 but they passed right by me. I didn\u2019t dwell on them and didn\u2019t take them to heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There\u2019s an interesting question here. Some people seem to develop a kind of <em>dependence<\/em> on help \u2014 they constantly need support, even when they could manage on their own. I\u2019m not talking about people with disabilities, but about a psychological need to always rely on someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can this constant \u201chelping\u201d actually harm a person more than it helps \u2014 when they\u2019re never given the chance to do things themselves?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, I think that can happen. Because if a person later realizes they\u2019ve failed to handle something on their own, it becomes hard for them emotionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve had situations where I told someone: <em>\u201cYou need to change the way you see the world.\u201d<\/em> It\u2019s not just about crying or complaining that no one helps \u2014 it\u2019s about finding the courage to shift your perspective, the courage to be different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Help will always exist \u2014 people will always help each other \u2014 but it\u2019s also important for a person to grow, to take responsibility for their own change. And when that happens, when someone truly changes, they often say, <em>\u201cYou know, I\u2019m happy now.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they helped themselves \u2014 and that\u2019s just as valuable as receiving help from others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s very important to know how to help yourself. I tell children this too when they\u2019re learning something: <em>How can you teach someone who doesn\u2019t want to learn?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can have the best teachers, parents, mentors, or conditions \u2014 but if a person doesn\u2019t want to change, doesn\u2019t want to help themselves \u2014 unfortunately, nothing will work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I imagine that\u2019s something you\u2019ve taught \u2014 and still teach \u2014 your daughters and granddaughters as well. Or perhaps you inspire them more by your own example?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think my own example matters a lot. But upbringing \u2014 if we can call it that \u2014 also plays a big role. It\u2019s something that happens every day, naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you come to your children, cook for them, or in the evening sing a little lullaby or read poetry \u2014 that\u2019s also upbringing. For instance, my children knew all of Lina Kostenko\u2019s poems for children by heart because I read them aloud. One poem, or one song, I\u2019d repeat for three days in a row, and then we\u2019d move on to another, and then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, my daughter Anya once asked me, \u201cMom, how do I even know all these songs?\u201d And I told her \u2014 \u201cBecause that\u2019s how it was. That\u2019s what you grew up with.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ve always believed that everything should be built on traditions \u2014 if you have that foundation, everything else will fall into place. Because we can\u2019t run away from our roots. Anyone who tries to run from this will stumble somewhere along the way \u2014 it\u2019s just unnatural.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And what\u2019s natural, well\u2026 it\u2019s like a tree. In spring it blooms, in summer it bears fruit, and in winter it rests. But imagine if it started blooming in winter and withered in spring \u2014 it simply wouldn\u2019t survive, or would become too weak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s the same with human nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed. As I mentioned earlier, in this project we explore folklore as a way to understand Ukrainian values \u2014 we study how each of them is reflected in traditions. And when it comes to <strong>mutual assistance<\/strong>, it\u2019s clear that it has always been an essential part of our life, in every historical period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can see it in songs, fairy tales, and proverbs alike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we compare the not-so-distant past \u2014 say, your childhood \u2014 with today, do you think people help each other less now, or, on the contrary, more?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019d say that today people are helping each other even more. The times are stressful, and I\u2019m not a psychologist, but I feel \u2014 both from my own experience and from others \u2014 that stress can actually bring out more compassion. People are more willing to give their time and energy to help others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nowadays, many people, even after work, find ways to help \u2014 bringing food, raising funds, or simply doing something kind for someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, my daughter Ivanna \u2014 she bakes pies. And not just for the family, but for our soldiers. Homemade pastries, straight from the heart. I\u2019ll come into her kitchen and say, \u201cIvanna, let me try one.\u201d And she\u2019ll say, \u201cMom, I\u2019ll bake some for you later \u2014 these are for the boys.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She has three children, she works a lot, but still \u2014 she finds the time and energy to do it. She does it out of her own will, late at night if needed. That, to me, is true kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, volunteering has become such a vital part of our lives, especially since 2014. In your view, is this wave of volunteering in Ukraine a continuation of our ancient tradition of mutual assistance \u2014 or is it a completely new phenomenon that arose from modern circumstances?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is definitely not a new phenomenon. As I\u2019ve said before \u2014 without mutual assistance, humanity simply wouldn\u2019t exist. I may sound repetitive, but it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s just that now, in our time, this value has become more visible, more concrete. Because everyone understands what war is \u2014 and we all know that by helping one another, we move faster toward victory. Even if not faster in the literal sense, then certainly stronger in spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When people feel supported, when they feel that others care \u2014 they find the strength to keep going, to defend, to fight. That\u2019s incredibly important. It gives us faith, it reminds us that we\u2019re moving in the right direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this isn\u2019t something new \u2014 it\u2019s an ancient tradition, going back perhaps even earlier than Trypillia, right up to our own time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me remind our viewers that today, in the <em>Archetype of the Nation<\/em> studio, we\u2019re talking about <strong>mutual assistance<\/strong> with <strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong>, head of the <em>Zerniatko<\/em> ensemble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking of help \u2014 in your main work with the ensemble, do you teach children <em>why<\/em> we should help one another?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, it\u2019s woven right into our culture. For example, when we go to the Carpathians on retreats, we always have younger and older children, and the older ones \u2014 especially the boys \u2014 take care of the younger ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I once organized a special <em>\u201cFather\u2019s Day\u201d<\/em> event. I told the boys, \u201cTomorrow is Father\u2019s Day. Each of you will take care of a younger girl \u2014 like a dad would.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They had to make sure she woke up on time, had breakfast, got her hair braided, and arrived at her activities. If her hair wasn\u2019t braided, they had to help her or find someone who could.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They\u2019d accompany them to games, play ball with them, and make sure everyone was smiling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you know, I was amazed by the result. The boys were so attentive, polite \u2014 knocking before entering, making sure everything was appropriate. They watched out for the girls during lunch, checked if they had eaten, if their hair was neat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They even learned to braid hair! And later in the evening, during our group meeting, they said, \u201cYou know, that was so cool. Now we understand what it\u2019s like to be a dad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s wonderful. During your tours, were there any examples of mutual assistance among children that especially stuck with you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh, absolutely \u2014 it happens all the time. For instance, when we performed in Japan, we didn\u2019t have a large group, but we needed to give a full one-hour concert. Between performances, the kids had to change into completely different costumes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So those who weren\u2019t on stage helped the others backstage \u2014 preparing costumes, helping tie ribbons, buttoning shirts, fixing hair. They could change in just <strong>three minutes<\/strong> \u2014 that\u2019s what we called <em>one size<\/em>, meaning a full outfit change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They helped each other constantly \u2014 no one stood aside. If someone younger was sad, everyone would come over, hug them, say, \u201cWe\u2019re with you. We\u2019re your friends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That kind of care was always there \u2014 we didn\u2019t even have to teach it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is it true that the <em>Zerniatko<\/em> ensemble raised one million hryvnias during your tour in Germany?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Actually, it was even more \u2014 closer to two million hryvnias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Kyiv was relatively safe again, we received an invitation from the <strong>Alla Kinzer Association of Ukrainians Abroad<\/strong>. They asked us to come to Germany to help raise funds for generators and other urgent needs \u2014 because at that time, there was no electricity in many places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I told the children, \u201cYou can stay home, rest, or go somewhere for vacation \u2014 or we can go and help people who are really struggling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they said, \u201cWe\u2019ll go and help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One girl was even supposed to visit her grandmother the next day for her engagement celebration. She called her mother and said, \u201cMom, I\u2019m leaving for Germany tomorrow as a volunteer with <em>Zerniatko<\/em> to help raise money for generators and other needs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her mom was shocked, but proud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we arrived, we performed three or four concerts. The organization was incredible \u2014 both Germans and Ukrainians living there wanted to contribute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Funds were collected, transferred, and used to buy generators, ambulances, an SUV, and other essential supplies. We even personally delivered one of the ambulances and sent hygiene kits, equipment \u2014 everything people needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we returned home, I thanked the parents for raising such children. I told them, \u201cYou are our future. You will build our country, our spirituality, our worldview, our traditions. But tell us, how did the idea of creating <em>Zerniatko<\/em> come about? And why that name?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It actually started with mutual assistance too. When I toured abroad with the <em>Veryovka Choir<\/em>, I saw how warmly people received us \u2014 how they admired Ukrainian culture, our traditional songs, our music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before that, you know, there was this common belief that \u201cabroad\u201d is somehow better \u2014 that everything there is extraordinary, while ours is simple or unremarkable. But that\u2019s not true. Things are good abroad, yes, but they\u2019re just as good here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once, I came back from a tour in France. After rehearsal, our conductor Avdiievskyi said, \u201cWe\u2019ll have a break, then we\u2019re heading to the Palace \u2018Ukraina.\u2019\u201d A few of us ran to the Dnipro Hotel for lunch. But they told us, \u201cSorry, only foreigners eat here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I thought, \u201cWhy only foreigners? Aren\u2019t we people too?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I started singing a French song \u2014 in French. And suddenly they said, \u201cOh, you\u2019re a foreigner? Then come in!\u201d I laughed \u2014 the place was nearly empty. That moment really stuck with me. Why should Ukrainians be treated differently in their own country?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wanted to change that. I wanted our children to see what life is like abroad, to meet other children, to understand who they are \u2014 that they are rich in spirit, that they have enormous cultural wealth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s how <em>Zerniatko<\/em> was born. I wanted to show our children that we are a people of great history, deep spirituality, and strong traditions \u2014 especially traditions of mutual assistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In my family, for instance, if we had something special \u2014 fish, honey, anything delicious \u2014 my parents would always say, <em>\u201cWhen guests come, we\u2019ll treat them to the best.\u201d<\/em> And everyone around us lived the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone was walking and it started raining, an old lady would rush out with a shawl shouting, \u201cCome here, I\u2019ll cover you!\u201d Once I fell into a puddle and ruined my brand-new coat \u2014 it was light-colored, and I was so scared my parents would scold me. But a neighbor smiled and said, <em>\u201cDon\u2019t worry, I\u2019ll clean it \u2014 it\u2019ll be as good as new.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s mutual assistance. It\u2019s what keeps us spiritually alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year <em>Zerniatko<\/em> turned <strong>35 years old<\/strong>. Children come to us with joy \u2014 they sing, dance, and create. And our graduates tell me, \u201cWe didn\u2019t just learn to sing and dance here. We learned how to communicate, how to coexist, how to be human.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s what I\u2019m most proud of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our children join the ensemble as young as <strong>three years old<\/strong>, and we welcome all \u2014 girls and boys \u2014 at the <em>House of Creativity \u201cWindy Mountains\u201d<\/em> in Kyiv\u2019s Podil district. We\u2019ll gladly teach everything we know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, <em>Zerniatko<\/em> has performed all over the world \u2014 in Europe, America, Canada, Japan, Singapore\u2026 It\u2019s easier to name the places we <em>haven\u2019t<\/em> been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These children are true <strong>cultural ambassadors<\/strong>. They show the world what Ukraine is, what our traditions are, what makes us unique. Because through culture, you can truly understand a people \u2014 their melodies, their songs, their words reveal their soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then, real friendship begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I\u2019ll never forget what happened in Japan. It was during the 2022 Football Championship. After our visit, teachers in several Tokyo schools asked their students to vote for which country they would support if the championship were held there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in six entire districts, all the children voted for Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teachers wrote to me about it, and it moved me to tears. It showed how much they felt our warmth, our culture, our sincerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You and your ensemble often perform folk songs \u2014 carols, <em>shchedrivkas<\/em>, and other traditional choral works. Can we consider a choir itself a kind of model of mutual assistance and harmony within a group?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, absolutely. A choir isn\u2019t just about coexistence \u2014 it\u2019s something much deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When voices blend together, they create unique vibrations \u2014 maybe scientists could explain it better \u2014 but these vibrations fill everyone around, both the singers and the listeners. That\u2019s why choral singing has always been so important in our culture. Families used to sing together; people sang in groups \u2014 it was a source of joy and emotional balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those vibrations brought peace, happiness, and connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, yes \u2014 a choir is much more than just a community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in a sense, it\u2019s also a form of learning how to live and interact together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exactly. Singing together teaches children to listen \u2014 really listen \u2014 and to observe. Many children who come to us can\u2019t reproduce sound correctly at first. People tell them, <em>\u201cYou have no ear for music.\u201d<\/em> But in most cases, they do \u2014 it just needs to be awakened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We work methodically, helping each child discover their inner sound. And when they finally sing \u2014 even a simple note \u2014 and it comes out right, they\u2019re <em>so<\/em> happy. You can see how it changes them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s where mutual trust and assistance come in \u2014 between teachers and children, and between the children themselves. No one laughs if someone sings off-key. We always say, <em>\u201cEveryone has their own talent. You\u2019ll get it \u2014 maybe not today, but you will.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it always happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That process builds confidence \u2014 in themselves, in their abilities. And that confidence shapes their character, their way of interacting with the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That\u2019s what mutual assistance really is \u2014 something deeply human, something that gives life meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if you&#8217;re not confident in yourself, you can&#8217;t really help others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, you can help in some ways, but when a person truly has confidence, they act with certainty. Someone might not feel sure, maybe it\u2019s hard for them, so you can help them \u2014 and that\u2019s natural. But I think most people, when they help, don\u2019t analyze it that deeply. They don\u2019t think, \u201cI\u2019ll help and that will make me better.\u201d No \u2014 first of all, they just want to help someone else, to give them confidence that they <em>can<\/em> do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because character must be formed, worldview must be formed \u2014 many things must take shape before a person can go out into the world and help others. You must first learn to help yourself. If you can help yourself, you\u2019ll know how to help others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this ensemble, you work alongside your daughters and granddaughters. Would you say that you pass your family values on to the ensemble? And if so, what are those values?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Family values are formed within each family \u2014 and of course, to some extent, we carry them into our work. Children come from different families, each with their own values, and we respect that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But during our shared celebrations \u2014 like St. Nicholas Day, Christmas, or the Welcoming of Spring \u2014 we always express them through our Ukrainian traditions. We try to pass on not just family values, but the spiritual values of the Ukrainian people as a whole. Because yes, family values are important, but each family also has its own special version of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now it\u2019s time for our traditional game called \u201cThe Folklore Chest.\u201d You\u2019re a happy mother and grandmother, so I\u2019m sure you\u2019ve read Ukrainian folk tales many times and probably know them by heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today\u2019s task \u2014 or game \u2014 is connected with those tales. I\u2019d love for it to travel around our country too, because it\u2019s something very meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here, look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Rayisa Zakletska<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is actually a reproduction of a drawing by Vikentiy Khvoyka, the archaeologist who excavated and discovered the Trypillian culture. It was originally a clay pot \u2014 and he illustrated how it would look if you unfolded it flat. What you see here is his original design, but we made a copy and printed it on a handkerchief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It carries deep meaning because the symbols on this vessel were believed to harmonize the person wearing them \u2014 bringing success, health, even healing. Specialists told me this; I didn\u2019t study it myself. So we decided to gift this handkerchief to people who truly inspire us, whom we wish success and well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And today, on behalf of the <em>Zerniatko<\/em> ensemble, I want to present it to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nik Lysytskiy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you for such a wonderful gift.
