Archetype of the Nation

A multimedia project exploring the foundations of Ukrainian national identity.

Watch, listen, read, and join the conversation

Who were we? Who have we become? Who can and should we be? We search for answers in mythology and folklore, as well as in conversations with our guests — vivid representatives of the Ukrainian nation.

The first season of Archetype of the Nation features twelve episodes, each dedicated to one of the core values that define Ukrainians. Together with folklorist Maryna Demedyuk, we explore how these values are reflected in Ukrainian folklore, and with our guests in the studio, we discuss their meaning in the lives of modern Ukrainians. Discover the materials and join the discussion in the comments — because in this project, every voice matters!

The democratic spirit is a defining feature of the Ukrainian national character — an ethnomental trait deeply and consistently reflected in the country’s folklore, traditions, and customary culture. From the earliest times, Ukrainians have valued equality, community self-governance, the election of leaders, and the rejection of absolute power.

Ukrainian emotionality developed as a response to a dramatic history — centuries of hardship, survival, and adaptation — as well as from a close connection to the rhythm of rural life, where people lived in harmony with nature and saw it as alive and magical.

Ingenuity is one of the defining traits of Ukrainians — the ability to find unconventional solutions in situations of limited resources, danger, or uncertainty. It combines sharp wit, keen observation, practical intelligence, and the talent for “getting out of the water dry” — turning adversity into opportunity.

The pursuit of justice in Ukrainian culture is an ethical foundation of existence.  In proverbs and sayings, anecdotes and epic songs, the ideal Ukrainian is one who seeks truth, rejects wrongdoing, values equality, and accepts responsibility.

In Ukrainian traditional culture and folklore, love is not simply passion — it is an ethical ideal that demands loyalty, honesty, and compassion. Living with love at the center remains a guiding worldview for Ukrainians — a moral force that has helped them preserve their humanity, even through the hardest times.

Love of freedom lies at the very heart of Ukrainian identity — a quality shaped through centuries of struggle, oppression, and resistance. For Ukrainians, freedom means more than independence from external control: it is the right to live with dignity, to make one’s own choices, and to belong to a community built on equality and respect.

Mutual support is one of the defining traits of the Ukrainian people. It reveals itself in the willingness to help others, to act together for the common good, to share with those in need, to never abandon someone in trouble, and to care for the vulnerable.

Prudence is one of the fundamental traits of the Ukrainian national character — reflected in measured thought, cautious action, and the ability to think strategically when needed.

A profound sense of rootedness in tradition is one of the defining features of the Ukrainian national psyche. Ukrainian culture is distinguished by continuity — the preservation and transmission of cultural forms, customs, beliefs, and behavioral models that have endured across generations, even through the most difficult periods of history.

In Ukrainian culture, self-expression is not merely creative freedom but a profound spiritual need. Through songs, stories, humor, and art, Ukrainians have not just spoken about themselves — they have preserved themselves. Self-expression is a form of resistance, a way to be heard, to leave a mark. It is a spiritual force that has shaped the Ukrainian character for centuries.

The Ukrainian culture of laughter is a core element of national identity — shaped by centuries of social struggle, historical experience, and cultural exchange. Ukrainian humor is both traditional and innovative, spanning genres from short anecdotes and comic songs to everyday banter and ritual performance.

Striving for excellence (or ideal) is a deep-rooted trait of Ukrainian spirituality, expressed through high moral expectations of oneself and others, faith in a just social order. It is not a naïve dream of perfection but a principle firmly grounded in history, religion, daily ethics, and folklore.
